Public School Teachers
Winton, NC

“Our mother was a Walden, Annie Walden Jones. She was an excellent teacher, and did things for people. She even wrote their love letters for them!”

The Jones family was the bedrock of a small rural “free born” black community in northeast North Carolina, where their ancestors go back to the 1790s. Their father’s mercantile store sat at the crossroads in Winston, and schools and other progressive ideals emanated from that center. Everybody for miles around knew that the Jones sisters were teachers, not only in schools but in church and community.
