Mae D. Holmes  (1906–1998)

“We had nothing. Whatever was left over anywhere, we got.”

A graduate of Shaw University, Mae Holmes was a social worker in New Jersey before opening in 1944 the first school in NC for black girl assigned by the courts. For twenty-eight years she served as Director of the Dobbs School for Girls in Kinston in eastern North Carolina.
