Katie Bunn (1891–1984)
Public School Teacher Rocky Mount, NC “The first year I had a hundred children. Fifty of them came in the afternoon. I could do nothing but look at them! Just do the best I could. And the were nice children.” Katie Bunn worked her way to pay for her own education in a Presbyterian academy, taught school, and educated an adopted daughter at Palmer Memorial Institute near Greensboro, North Carolina, one of the finest private schools for blacks in the segregated South, founded by Charlotte Hawkins Brown. < > |
